Workshop 1 – Day 3

Workshop Day 3 30th Jan– The third day of the workshop took on with Grace discussing the photo essays of the remaining groups. Everyone was then provided with newspapers and were asked to pick out interesting articles from it. Students then discussed the stories which fascinated them. The topic of each story was noted down which altogether at the end left us all with a number of ideas on which films can be made. This was a good exercise letting our minds open to think about different ideas.

Patrick then carried on with a session where participants talked about the ideas that they’ve come up with. This was an interesting session as different ideas aroused different views. There was interesting debates, arguments and counter arguments.

We were asked by the hotel management to take early lunch that day but having tea break a little time before that didn’t left anyone with any appetite.  At least this is what everyone told each other, but their plates illustrated a whole different story! Well I guess I can understand, who could deprive himself with that kind of meal. So that’s ok people.

Returning from the lunch break, participants were asked to divide themselves into groups of 3 people each. So they ended up making 8 groups of Karachi and 3 of Lahore students.

Karachi Groups

Group 1: Ali Sheikh, Mohib Billoo, Alifia Dairkee

Group 2: Ali Ahadulah, Ali Changezi

Group 3:  M.Bilal Latif, Sehar Plaijo

Group 4: Prem Lata, Sidra Hamid, Waqqas Hussein

Group 5: Ghayasuddin, M. Zohaib Siddiqui,  Sarah Masood

Group 6: Ali Ahmed, Summaiyyah Hafeez, Talha Hameed

Group 7: Kayzad Giara, Nabiha Khan, Sarah Ismail

Lahore Groups

Group 9: Awais Ahmed, Huma Akbar, Kamran Khan

Group 10: Atif Ahmed Qureshi, Kiran Mushtaq, M. Umer Saeed

Group 11: Ali Hameed, Alizeb Raees

Once the groups were finalized, Patrick and Grace took each group’s photograph with them holding their group number (it was a bit funny and they seemed like people about to be imprisoned. I guess all this was done for a record). There were again interactive debates regarding the film concepts.

The day ended with the instructors showing a documentary called ‘Anyway Who Are You?’ and discussing the techniques used and the treatment of the film.

Workshop 1 – Day 1

28th Jan, day 1 of the workshop.

All the students are now familiar with each other and there’s no hesitancy in the air. The worshop  kicks off with Patrick explaining what a documentary is and further exlained documentary modes and films. The students also pitched in their views and started interacting.

The participants are very interactive when it comes to Q/A sessions. Each one of them has his own point of view and the best part is that they are vocal about it and are not hesitant to share it.

Later Grace took charge and explained how an image can narrate a story on its own. She gave an interesting exercise of creating a photographic essay. The students were given an hour to go around and find interesting stories in their surroundings and depict it through still images. While dong this task, the participant’s energy could clearly be seen.

The instructors also showed several documentaries which gave the students more exposure to the genre and helped them expand their knowledge of the medium.

The workshop was interjected by small tea and lunch breaks giving everybody a chance to mingle and relax. The first day went well being a good mixture of learning and fun.
